Halloween season kicks off, with chills across San Diego County

Halloween season kicks off, with chills across San Diego County
It's still more than a month away, but Halloween is in the air around San Diego.

If you like having your wits scared out of you, there are now several options for you around the county.

Take a stroll through the aisles of the Halloween Experience store in La Jolla's Costa Verde shopping center, and the choices of how you can transform yourself on All Hallows Eve are mind-boggling.

But this year's favorite costume belongs to the younger set.

"'Frozen,' 'Frozen,' little girls even adults, they're loving 'Frozen,'" said Keely Ulrich, owner of the Halloween Experience store.

But if established cartoon characters aren't your thing, how about an old favorite like Dorothy from the "Wizard Of Oz"?

Or there are the old stand bys. The maniacal scary clown, a space alien, a skull.

But it's not just personal favorites, the calendar is playing a part in costume choices this year.

"Halloween falls on a Friday this year so we are anticipating a lot of group and family costumes," Ulrich said. "We just had a family come in and buy four superhero costumes."

In fact, Ulrich said, Halloween has now grown to a  $1 billion-a-year business nationwide.

At the Del Mar Fairgrounds, the Scream Zone has plenty of monstrous frights in store.

"We have the Triple Haunt, which is known as the House of Horror, the Chamber and the Haunted Hayride, which is really cool. It's on the backside here in the stable area and it's truly haunted back there," said fair spokeswoman Linda Zweig.

Also opening tonight, The Haunted Hotel in downtown San Diego. And for nature lovers who desire a fright, the Haunted Trail at Balboa Park is now scaring hikers.

New York Fashion Week is a style Super Bowl

The event pumps an estimated $850 million into the Big Apple’s economy
New York City is no sartorial slouch — but for two weeks a year, it becomes the absolute epicentre of fashion.
So what is the en vogue event that has the world’s style set on its best -(and busiest!) behaviour? That would be New York Fashion Week.
The biannual affair, which is held every February and September at various locations throughout the city including Lincoln Centre and Milk Studios, is a week’s worth of fashion-packed events that kick off the global tour of fashion weeks in locales such as Milan, Paris and London, otherwise known as “Fashion Month”.
The eight day event, which takes place Sept. 4-11, showcases the latest clothing and accessories creations from predominantly American designers.
From street-style favourite Alexander Wang to gown guru Zac Posen, the industry’s best and brightest designers will send models outfitted in their Spring/Summer 2015 collections down catwalks at fashion shows or intimate presentations — all for consumption by the educated eyes of editors, bloggers and fashion-loving celebrities — not to mention the millions of eager watchers on social media streams.halloween costumes clearance halloween costumes clearance adults
Consider yourself warned, for the next eight days your Twitter and Instagram feeds are sure to be chock full of #NYFW chatter — even if you’re just a fair-weather fan of the fashion world.
But it’s not just the style sector that benefits from the annual events. Boasting corporate partnerships from Mercedes-Benz, DHL, American Express, Samsung and more, it has become a boon for local businesses such as hotels and restaurants, as well.
So, just how big is New York Fashion Week? To put it lightly — it’s big. Like Super Bowl big.
While final statistics are not yet available, Super Bowl XLVIII, which was held in East Rutherford, N.J. on Feb. 2, was expected to net the Greater New York Area more than $400 million, according The Associated Press.
By comparison, the twice-yearly New York Fashion Week events infuse an estimated $850 million into the city’s economy, according to data compiled by the New York City Economic Development Corporation.
Now that’s what I’d call a fashion touchdown.
NYFW officially kicks off today — and I’m going to take you inside the action — from backstage interviews to street-style galleries — and virtually everything in between.

Leno enjoys life after ‘Tonight Show’

Leno enjoys life after ‘Tonight Show’
ATLANTA – Six months removed from his 20-plus years as host of “The Tonight Show,” Jay Leno only offers positive thoughts about what most people would not

necessarily call “retirement.”

“I’m doing 200 stand-up dates a year,” said Leno, a notorious workaholic. “I enjoy being a road comic again. It’s really fun to concentrate on a joke. When

I did ‘The Tonight Show,’ I did different jokes in the same place. Now I do the same jokes in different places.”

We recently talked to him by phone from his home in Los Angeles:

Q: Do you do a lot of current events jokes on the road?

A: It’s tricky. Most people, especially during the summer, don’t follow current events and don’t know what’s going on. Consequently, I try not to be too

current. Folks who go to clubs, chances are they didn’t watch the news. Plus, a news joke that was funny Monday may not be so funny by Thursday. People move on.

Facts change.

Q: Your contract is technically up with NBC this month, but they had Jimmy Fallon start early. How do you feel he’s doing?

A: I’m really proud of Jimmy. He’s doing a terrific show. People try to create these feuds but we really are good friends. And you got to know when to step

down. When you’re 35, 40 years old talking to a 22-year-old supermodel, that’s cool. When you’re 64, you’re that creepy old guy, thank you. You have to know

when to go.

Q: You worked with Fallon on a “House of Cards” parody where you push him in front of a train to take back “The Tonight Show.” Does it bug you that you have

that reputation? (Leno lost “The Tonight Show” in 2009 to Conan O’Brien but got the hosting job back less than a year later.)

A: It’s so stupid. I’m just amazed. People really have no idea. On the one hand, you’re like this jerk. On the other hand, you’re some sort of evil genius

who demanded that NBC give the show back to you. That’s not how it works. These are all business decisions based on ratings and whatever. That’s show business.

Q: I’m sure you’ve been asked this a lot already, but what’s your take on Robin Williams (who died Aug. 11)?

A: When (Jerry) Seinfeld and I hang out, we talk about the early days at the clubs and the people we worked with and the terrible gigs. The sad part is I won’t

be able to grow old and do that with Robin.

What I liked about Robin is as big a star as he was, he never badmouthed people. He always respected the people who helped him along the way. He would always

help out young comedians or a homeless guy. He was genuinely a kind, decent person who always kept it at a higher level.
